Yoga for disabilities "If you can breathe you can do yoga" Krishnamacharya Yoga is suitable for everyone. Yoga means union, so that is what we are trying to create in the body, mind and breath in order to bring awareness to our self. With an integrated practice of yoga we can create a better sense of connection with our body and mind.
What are the types of disability? Since 1994, I have been teaching people of all ages with all types of disability, including cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida, visual and hearing impairment. Some students were born with their disability and some have developed it from disease or injuries. Some students are in a wheelchair, others have more mobility. With some students, I rely on the help offered by volunteers, with others we use props. In some cases, the students themselves have developed versions of their posture or movement. My students include athletes with disability. Some students have private lessons. Every posture in yoga can be adapted, which means that we can find a suitable variation for every student. Our lessons consist of breathing and centering, warm-up of some type, practice of postures followed by a relaxation, meditation or massage.
What do the students think? Students have made the following comments about their yoga: "helped me to think about breathing and gets the blood flowing to where it should". – Barbara "… the breathing has taken me beyond the limitations of my disease." – Helen "…I can now balance and do more things with my leg than before… when I can’t get to sleep I use meditation to help me relax and get to sleep…I really enjoy yoga because it’s fun and it gives me the satisfaction of being able to do things I wouldn’t normally do."
